Elanders first among Swedish graphic companies to sign global accord with UNI

Elanders and UNI (Union Network International) have signed a global accord that guarantees international labour standards at the place of work and the rights of employees to organise themselves and sets a new standard for working conditions and union rights in the printing and publishing industry.

The global accord was the result of coordinated action by UNI affiliate Grafiska, other UNI affiliates representing Elanders employees around the globe and UNI Graphical which organised the series of meetings and consultations between the company and the unions to make sure that fundamental rights of employees are respected.

The global accord gives the union, among other things, the right to organise all of Elanders’ units worldwide and the employer is prohibited from using child and forced labour. This agreement makes Elanders the first multinational Swedish company in the graphic industry to have this kind of global accord.

The EWC agreement that was signed simultaneously gives employees in Elanders’ companies operating in EU the right to jointly form an Elanders European Work Council. This EWC will be an inter-professional organ for all employees in Elanders’ European companies that are a part of the Elanders Group. It will serve as Executive Management’s link to the employees in cross-border matters concerning communication, consultation and negotiations.

”With this global accord and the EWC agreement signed this week, we have taken a big step towards creating not only a better Elanders that accepts its responsibility, but a big step towards our goal: A global Elanders with great opportunities for our customers and employees,” says Patrick Holm, President and CEO.

”It is very positive that Elanders has signed a global accord with our international union, UNI, and thereby partaking in the work to create a fairer world”, says the President of the Graphic & Media Workers’ Union Tommy Andersson in a press release this week.

UNI organises about 20 million members and the Graphic & Media Workers’ Union is one of the member unions. The Graphic & Media Workers’ Union sees global accords as a positive way of stopping and affecting the negative effects of globalisation. Companies that have signed a global accord become more transparent for unions. Employees in a multinational company are given tolerable working conditions and this can spread to other domestic companies.
